Windows 8 said to be a necessary gamble for Microsoft

Windows 8 said to be a necessary gamble for Microsoft

. Microsoft (MSFT) has taken quite a bit of grief from software developers, OEMs and industry watchers for its approach in developing Windows 8, but analysts at Gartner say that the company had to take risks with its new operating system to avoid getting left in the dust by iOS and Android. In particular, Gartner says that the advent of smartphones and tablets have relegated the PC to just another device that people use to work rather than the central productivity tool for workers.

HP's upcoming ElitePad 900 is a powerful Windows 8 tablet aimed at enterprise users, but it will likely appeal to consumers as well.

Apple acknowledges iOS 6 Maps failure, hiring new devs from Google

Last week, just a few days prior to the official iPhone 5 release date, Apple released its iOS 6 into the wild, bringing with it a highly criticized maps application. When the company initially announced it would drop Google Maps and YouTube from iOS 6, users were concerned Apple's replacement maps application wouldn't compare to Google's refined app. Unfortunately for them, their worst fears came true. While the app does work, it is plagued with poor directions, erroneous map data, strange visual glitches and a lack of a Street View-like feature.

Facebook trialling automatic Photo Syncing for Android app

It might not be the biggest Facebook-photo news of late, but if you like to share your life with the network's Android app, there's word of a new feature on trial just for you - photo syncing. Sound familiar. Sure, that's because you might already be doing something similar with the Google+ app with your very same phone. But, if Facebook is more your jam, then it looks like you might soon be able to shuffle those food pictures up to your profile "automagically." If you're worried that you might accidentally share something a little more private, be assured that photos sent to Facebook won't be public until you decide to share.
