Skype promising CD quality sound from new 'Opus' audio codec, fewer choppy calls

Skype promising CD quality sound from new 'Opus' audio codec, fewer choppy calls

Skype's got a new audio codec that it thinks you should be pumped about, and it's called "Opus." It's been kicked around at Skype since March 2009, though work didn't begin in earnest until June of the same year, and it was just certified by the IETF as a standard of online audio. Senior Skype architect Koen Vos lead a team of audio engineers to create the hybrid audio codec, combining Skype's own "SILK" codec with Xiph.Org's "CELT" codec, intending to create a low-bandwidth codec "designed for the internet." But what does that mean for us. It means "CD quality" audio (fullband stereo sound) over Skype, regardless of internet connection.

HP hints at enterprise tablet launch soon

HP hints at enterprise tablet launch soon

So we have seen our fair share of Sleekbooks from HP today in addition to the HP ENVY dm4 and an NFC mouse, but what about the tablet front. Surely HP is aware that the iPad is one of the hottest devices in the market at the moment, where the highly competitive tablet and smartphone market do seem to bring out the best of innovation in companies who are playing the game. Well, it does seem as though HP has not forgotten about the tablet market, considering how the last line of their press release mentioned that an "enterprise-ready tablet will be announced soon.".

BlackBerry 10 L-series phone image leaks again

The BlackBerry 10 L-series phone is out in the wild again, except this time someone bothered to switch it on. This image first found on Instagram shows a person who really needs a manicure holding what is unmistakably the phone previously known as 'London' that we have seen again and again in the past. The phone is showing the application launcher but it seems the icons are on the homescreen itself, à la, the iOS.

SpaceX to start International Space Station cargo runs on October 7th, kick off routine private spaceflight

SpaceX just put a date on when private space travel becomes a seemingly everyday affair: October 7th. That's when the company and NASA expect to launch a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station delivering the first of a dozen cargo loads to the International Space Station through the unmanned Dragon spacecraft. While we're not expecting any trouble - SpaceX has done this before - there's a chance for a rescheduled launch on October 8th if there are any minor setbacks.

Samsung Galaxy S III for MetroPCS hands-on (video)

Considering the recent glut of smartphone announcements, news of yet another Galaxy S III variant shouldn't have you tittering with glee. But for those of you tied to MetroPCS and hankering for a beastly mobile option, that 4.8-inch handset is almost ready to ship. Shown off at the carrier's booth here at Pepcom, the designed by nature device is virtually unchanged, save for branding on the back that nods to the 4G network it runs on. Otherwise, it's the same TouchWizzed Android ICS experience we've come to know and love. There's no official word on pricing or a concrete release date - outside of a very vague end of Q4 bow.

MetroPCS looks to be among the first to launch nationwide VoLTE

. MetroPCS (PCS) is en route to becoming the first U.S. carrier to utilize Voice Over LTE (VoLTE). CEO Roger Linquist on Thursday revealed at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference that his company plans to launch VoLTE in all of its LTE markets within the next four to six months, Fierce Wireless reported. MetroPCS launched the service in Dallas earlier this year, and while customers have reported improved voice quality, the company continues to face various technical challenges. “There are a number of changes that need to be made in base station optimization in Dallas,” Linquist said.
