Sony S1 Smiles for the Camera

Sony S1 Smiles for the Camera

When we directed your attention to a short video of the upcoming S2 tablet with Honeycomb, we overlooked Sony's other Android tablet, the S1, which was also part of golem.de‘s hands-on. So here it is, looking mighty sexy if I do say so myself. If you were wondering how the curved stylings of the S1 tablet would translate to the final product, it looks like Sony managed to pull it off. It definitely evokes the look of a book or magazine folded open while maintaining some pretty sleek lines in a nice glossy, black package.

iPhone, Android gain U.S. share in May, BlackBerry falters

Apple and Google both gained smartphone share in the U.S. last month according to new data from Nielsen. Android represented 38% of the smartphone market in May, up two points from 36% in 3-month period ending in April. Samsung Galaxy Z revealed by Swedish network

Samsung Galaxy Z revealed by Swedish network

The Swedish arm of the Three network is currently teasing its users with the Samsung Galaxy Z, which appears to be a minor downgrade of the popular Galaxy S II to be sold on slightly cheaper tariffs. The camera spec has been dropped to 5megapixels, but you still get a 4.2″ screen (“Super Clear LCD”) running at 800×480 resolution, Android 2.3, plus a 1GHz dual-core processor. So it's nearly the same.
And that's it. See the Galaxy Z listing for yourself over at Three Sweden.

California raceway gets 1,600 solar panels

We all love solar power, not because it's environmentally friendly, but it saves us some bucks. Well as far as sports go, the one where you drive cars around in circles several times is likely not one of the most energy efficient. With that in mind, it's nice to see locations like Northern California's Infineon Raceway working toward sustainability, announcing this week the installation of more than 1,600 solar panels. The panels, manufactured by Panasonic, will provide around 41-percent of the Infineon's energy usage.

Olympus PEN E-P3 with Fast Auto-Focus and Shutter Response

Olympus PEN E-P3 comes in white, silver and black. The Olympus PEN E-P3 is the new flagship PEN camera with interchangeable MICRO Four Thirds lenses featuring a new Live MOS image sensor and a new image processing engine (TruePic VI Image Processor). I personally really like the  design of its full metal body which is reminiscent of the traditional analog reflex cameras from the seventies.
The most noticeable feature is the super fast auto-focus with 35 separate focus points and the shutter response time of less than 60 milliseconds! I saw a demo during the briefing and it was very impressive.

Robotic armpit sweats, Transformers robots could make do with some

I don't know about you, but even if you left me in a room all day long to conjure up something robotic, I don't think the thought of a robotic armpit would ever cross my mind. Kevin Grennan, a London-based designer however, has a clearly different outlook, as he designed this robotic armpit which is similar to that of human armpits – meaning it sweats. The whole idea behind this is to make use of odors to improve human-robot interaction.

Delkin 64GB SDXC memory card is fastest in the world

We are rather wary when a particular manufacturer claims that their handset is the thinnest in the world, or in this case, Delkin with their 64GB SDXC UHS-I memory card which is touted to be the “fastest in the world”. The new 64GB 633X rated card was specially built for streaming HD and 3D video applications, where it is able to hit speeds of up to 45MB/s and read at speeds up to 95MB/s, effectively eliminating any pause when it comes to the recording process which users tend to experience with slower cards.

Microsoft Cashes in on Two More Android Manufacturers

Microsoft Cashes in on Two More Android Manufacturers

While bigger Android manufacturers like Motorola and Barnes & Noble have decided to fight off Microsoft's attempts to cash in on supposedly-infringed patents, smaller companies just don't have the luxury to afford a drawn-out legal battle with one of the nation's largest companies. It's much easier for them to simply pay Microsoft the fees they demand, and that's exactly what Velocity Micro and General Dynamics have decided to do.

Mivizu Sleek Leather Case in Black Stone for iPhone 4 Review

I'm reviewing an iPhone 4 case from Mivizu called the Sleek Leather Case in Black Stone. It is part of a collection of cases from Mivizu with 11 different finishes, including carbon fiber, that center on a flip cover case design. I spent a week with this as my only case to get a proper feel for using this as someone's primary iPhone cover, and came away impressed but with a couple slight problems. Read on for my review of the Sleek Leather Case in Black Stone.

Team Black Hat Leaks Gingerbread for the Samsung Droid Charge

A leaked version of Android 2.3.3 is now available for the Samsung DROID Charge thanks to Team Black Hat, purveyors of Droid custom ROMs and leaks. In fact, TBH is doubling your pleasure with two separate options for download. For the purists, the stock version of the leak comes with all the carrier bloatware you could want. For those seeking something a bit more svelte, a version exists with the excess apps trimmed out. Both are currently only available via TBH’s $2.99 application. If you can wait, the crew plans to make the leak available for free within the next couple of days.

BBC iPlayer Android app now supports Android 3.X tablets

BBC iPlayer Android app now supports Android 3.X tablets

An update to the BBC's rather controversial Android iPlayer app has gone live, with the corporation adding “support for Android 3 tablets” to the app. We haven't yet taken the plunge into tablet ownership, let alone a fancy Honeycomb model, so can't comment on what other changes there may be within the slightly disappointing code. However, some comments beneath the listing and on the Twitter suggest it merely adds a link to the iPlayer web site, which would be something of a swizzle – plus someone says it doesn't work on their Eee Transformer with Android 3.1.

Dell Venue Pro update to arrive next month

If you happen to own the Dell Venue Pro, then you would be pleased to hear that the Windows Phone 7-powered handset will be receiving an update next month which will help fix up stability issues in addition to its speed. What makes the Dell Venue Pro special. Well, for starters, this is the only one of its kind in terms of hardware design for the Windows Phone 7 platform, sporting a portrait keyboard which will definitely appeal to BlackBerry users to make the jump. Still, good hardware doesn't mean all is fine and dandy – there is still the software part which needs to be stable, and the upcoming update intends to fix that.

I love multipurpose products, so the Mouse Pad Travel Pouch from Smartfish caught my eye and I thought it might interest all of you as well. The Travel Pouch is a 9" diameter neoprene mouse pad that zips up to form a handy pouch. Motorola Wilder now available in the UK for £98.49 SIM-free, on contract from £10.66 per month

The Motorola Wilder was officially announced in the UK a few weeks ago, and we'd seen it once even before that when it first leaked going just by its model number EX130. The Wilder, if you remember, is a rugged (well, dust and splash resistant) entry-level touchscreen phone running Qualcomm's Brew platform. Back when it was unveiled, we were led to believe that it will be an exclusive to the Carphone Warehouse in the UK, but it looks like that's not the case. One thing which does seem to be exclusive to Carphone Warehouse is the £49.95 price for which the retailer will sell it once it launches in next month.

Video: 3D Video on the HTC EVO 3D

The Evo 3D is a bit of a novelty really, I still don't see the fascination with 3D video actually. The Evo 3D is a dual core 4.3", Android monster, with a high resolution qHD (960 x 540 Mp) screen. Now it has what we are calling "glasses less 3D", meaning when watching 3D video or viewing 3D photos on the device you don't need to wear anything special. It's got three cameras, two rear facing at 5 Mp, and a front facing at 1.3 Mp plus a dual led flash. It will capture 2D and 3D video at 720 p, [not 1020p as was first rumoured].

US FCC found a Nokia N950 with 12-Megapixel camera sensor

US FCC found a Nokia N950 with 12-Megapixel camera sensor

Nokia said that their developer phone the N950 with MeeGo will feature an 8-megapixel shooter, which the Finnish firm touted as “different” than the unit in its older brother. But surprisingly the US FCC managed to get hold of the phone submitted by Nokia for checking and approval, and somehow they spotted a 12-megapixel camera sensor within. Perhaps the "difference" is the extra 4-Megapixel. Is Nokia going for a last minute component change. Well it seemed that Nokia is still going with their old habit of awful phones with huge-ass sensors.

[Review] Sony CX700V Camcorder

Let me first start this review by stating that my background mostly lies in photography and that the usage I have of video cameras is limited to the Canon 5D mark 2. While it provides remarkable performance, one has to admit that it is far from compact and for that reason I wanted to give a camcorder a try, namely the Sony CX700V. What first attracted me in the Sony CX700V is the build quality: when comparing it with its main competitors from Canon, JVC and Sanyo it was the only one in that price range that did not feel like a cheap toy.

ChillBed Laptop Cooling Stand Review

ChillBed Laptop Cooling Stand Review

One of the problems with laptops is their tendency to overheat, which can damage internal components.  Their small size doesn't allow a lot of venting nor big cooling fans to keep down heat.  And their portability often means that people are using them places that can block the cooling vents - like on laps or teenagers who use them while lying on the bed.  There are a lot of products that try to address the cooling problems inherent with laptops.  Some products are as simple as little plastic feet to elevate the back of the laptop and allow airflow on all sides.  Some are more elaborate lapdesks or stands with fans to blow air across the
