GDrive test page pops up in Google search, inches closer to an actual product

The GDrive leaks and rumors have started up again in earnest, really for the first time since 2007. The service seemed to destined for the dustbin when Docs started accepting any type of file, but in September hints started dropping that Drive may be resurrected. The latest interesting, if not entirely telling development, is a link to a "test page for Platypus (GDrive)" that pops up when you Google "Writely," the online word processor that eventually became Google Docs. Those with more robust memories may remember that Platypus was the codename attached to Google's cloud storage solution back when it was originally being dogfooded.

Android tablet turned into a TV gaming console

Android tablet turned into a TV gaming console

While tablets are still have a long way to go before they can replace our regular gaming consoles, they're definitely headed in the right direction. The folks over at HDblog.it recently turned their Acer Iconia Tab A500 into a gaming system with the help of an Xbox 360 controller and an HDMI-cable connected to a 40″ Samsung TV. Their game of choice. The recently released Shadowgun. The game definitely looks as good as it does on the tablet and on the TV, but there is some noticeable lag.

GM doing fine at retaining Pontiac owners

This isn't the first time we've reported positive news about General Motors retaining former Pontiac owners. Get a few more stories like this latest report from Edmund's Auto Observer, and it will mark an ongoing positive trend for GM. Edmunds.com crunched the numbers to see how well the General is hanging on to customers after shutting out the lights at Pontiac, and it found that nearly 40 percent of Pontiac owners stayed with a vehicle from a General Motors brand. The numbers are a little lower than an earlier R.L. Polk & Company study, but Edmunds says General Motors is keeping more former Pontiac buyers than it has since 2007.

Cyborgs experience less pain with new brain implant tech

Cyborgs experience less pain with new brain implant tech

The question is this – what is pain. Some of us identify with pain, whether physically, mentally or emotionally, while others are seemingly impervious to this so human feeling. What about cyborgs – are they able to feel pain. Well, MIT researchers have managed to figure out how to stimulate target nerves that results in less collateral pain for part-human, part-machine cyborgs. This is made possible by tweaking the electrical balance of fluids that surround a nerve, where they can still trigger a nerve using far less electrical current.

Samsung Galaxy Note Begins Shipping To Europe In Spite Of Apple

Samsung has reportedly begun shipping out its 5.3-inch behemoth, the Galaxy Note, to Europe. In a move that is sure to get Apple's blood boiling, the phoneblet will be arriving in Germany first. Samsung is currently appealing a temporary ban of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany. Apple has yet to mention the Galaxy Note in their legal battles against Samsung but I'm sure all that will change once the Note arrives on the scene.
The Galaxy Note features a 720p display, 1.4GHz processor, 8MP rear/2MP front facing cameras and running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Amazon's Kindle Fire made big headlines not so much because of the features or specs it housed but more because of its lower-than-expected $200 price tag. If you thought that was cheap wait until you see the $35 Aakash Android tablet launching next month in India. The tablet was developed as a low-cost, government subsidized computing device for students. The boys over at VentureBeat were able to get some hands-on with the device and surprisingly, had mostly good things to say about the tab.

BMW bringing Z4 GT3 to North America, but still no Z4 M

BMW bringing Z4 GT3 to North America, but still no Z4 M

There's something rotten in the state of Bavaria when BMW's M division is more keen to tune out crossovers than roadsters. While the previous-generation Z4 and the Z3 that preceded it both had M versions, the current Z4 has been conspicuously absent from the hall's of the BMW performance division. That could all change if the bean-counters see a good business case for a Z4 M, but in the meantime we're reportedly slated to get something even crazier: the V8-powered Z4 GT3. The competition-spec model loses the folding roof in favor of a fixed one reinforced by a full roll cage.

If you ever wanted a reason to get your hands on a Nokia device, the Finnish company has entered into an agreement with the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) to develop an NFC-based ticketing solution, whose pilot program is expected to make its debut on regional commuter trains by the end of 2011. Given that we're about 2 months away from the end of year, it looks like commuters looking forward to pay for their tickets via NFC will not be in for a long wait.

Apple patent suggests gestures used to control devices from a distance

While there are video editing tools for iOS devices, the fact of the matter is that it's a bit hard to edit videos on such small screens, plus sometimes touching the screen can cause unintentional editing which can ultimately lead to frustration. A new patent by Apple has suggested a way for iOS users to edit videos on their devices through the use of gestures without having to touch the device itself.

Folks living in Australia will finally be able to gain access to the Zune Music Marketplace and Zune Music Pass this coming November 16th, although I am not quite sure just how many people living there had the patience to wait for so many years before they are able to receive music directly from Zune. RoundFlash, A Ring-Flash and Soft-Box in One

It's round. It's a flash. It's RoundFlash. The RoundFlash is — not surprisingly — a round flash. To be more specific, it's a tent-like collapsible ring-flash adapter that also works somewhat like a softbox. The trouble is, the results aren't really what you'd expect from either.

A ring flash is a donut of light that sits around the camera's lens. Because the light comes from all directions, the shadows cancel each other out.

New BMW M3 to come in sedan form first

New BMW M3 to come in sedan form first

Typically, when BMW releases a new M3, it launches it in coupe form first. (In fact, sales of the M3 sedan have, in North America at least, slowed to such an extent that BMW NA was tempted to stop bringing it here altogether.) But not the new model – according to the latest intel, the next-gen M3 will arrive in four-door guise first. Sources indicate a couple of reasons for that: First, the new 3 Series (pictured above in M Sport guise) on which it'll be based has so far has only come out in sedan form. Second, because the next-gen M3 is anticipated to lose some of its edge.

Until September, Windows XP has still been the world's most popular operating system and will be, according to StatCounter, surpassed in market share by Windows 7. Born as the sixth major generation of Windows, the software was introduced in 25 languages around the globe, but did not sell well initially. Within the first three days after launch, only 260,00 copies were sold in the U.S.

Founder Julian Assange told British media in London that the financial blockade against the website has drained the financial resources and he would need about $3.5 million to keep WikiLeaks going into 2013. At a news conference, Assange criticized a “dangerous, oppressive and undemocratic” that has cost WikiLeaks “tens of millions of dollars.” If additional financing is not secured, WikiLeaks will have to shut down “by the turn of the new year.”. WikiLeaks apparently receives only about $10,000 per month in donations and has been forced to suspend processing and publishing new leaks.

Pentax Q interchangeable lens camera review

Pentax Q interchangeable lens camera review

Most of the interchangeable lens cameras we've seen to date seem to follow a standard mold: they have similarly sized bodies, comparable designs and either an APS-C or Micro Four Thirds sensor at the core. But recently, some manufacturers - namely, Nikon and Pentax - have begun shrinking camera bodies in an attempt to make them even more appealing to point-and-shoot users. The result: a smaller, lighter, more fashionable ILC - that also happens to have an itsy bitsy image sensor.

Cadillac spends some more time with ATS at the 'Ring

There's a new "ATS the Journey" video from Cadillac up on YouTube, called "Chapter One: Welcome to the Green Hell.". We saw the introductory video two weeks ago, and unfortunately, there's not much new to see in this one. We get some good looks at the exterior of the test mule, though for some reason one shot of the the car out on the course has the ATS blurred out. And we're kind of surprised that General Motors President of North America Mark Reuss' name is misspelled.

Consumer Reports has released its annual Car Reliability Study, and the results weren't kind to Ford. The automaker saw its ranking fall from 10th to 20th due to issues with three specific models: the Explorer, Fiesta and Focus. Each of those vehicles ranked above average in reliability during their first year on the market due to issues with MyFord Touch and the dual-clutch transmissions in the Fiesta and Focus. Meanwhile, Chrysler busily inched its way up the reliability ladder.

We're not exactly surprised, but Kia will be selling the sedan version of the Rio for $200 less than the five-door hatchback. The five-door is on sale now, while the $13,400 sedan won't hit dealers until January 2012. An automatic-equipped Rio sedan will set you back $14,500, while the high-end SX trim starts at $17,500. None of those prices include the $750 destination charge. While we found a lot to like about the all-new Rio five-door in our First Drive, we remain disappointed that yet another automaker has decided to charge a premium for the hatchback version.

Mountain View's lawyers can collectively breathe a sigh of relief, as the FTC has accepted an earlier proposal relating to Buzz's numerous privacy violations.
